Democracy “needs to be managed”, says Leo Varadkar, “you need a strong Party system and a strong whip system”

On the Tonight with Vincent Browne Show (13/9/12) on TV3 the Government Minister was commentating on how legislation was passed through the Dáil. He was asked if it was an ‘inner circle’ of cabinet who decided everything and then used the infamous ‘whip’ to force their decision through the Dáil?  He was asked if this ‘oul democracy’ was too much to be bothering with … his reply:

Democracy … “needs to be managed”, says Leo Varadkar, “you need a strong party system and a strong whip system”

This is how vested interests rule, ALL of the parties follow this practice and the result is that in reality private clubs and ‘inner circles’ decide everything.  This is one of the key ways in which our democratic right to decide the policy of our own state is usurped.
